If you want to explore the surroundings, you can have an adventure to Ria Formosa Natural Park, an impressive natural escape, formed of salt pans, lagoons and barrier islands. These islands protect the region from the powerful seas, while also providing some of the quietest and most scenic beaches of the Algarve. A boat tour is a great way to discover the region, with its thriving marine ecosystem, unspoilt beaches, and rich fishing heritage.

Have a wonderful time while strolling in Jardim da Alameda, the largest and probably the oldest park in Faro. It was founded in the late 19th Century and the nearby school enlivens it. There are plenty of old trees, a little water cascade, and a couple of classic buildings, including the Municipal Library.
Walk around the paths crossing the bridges over the stream and take your time to admire the ornamental waterfalls and fountains. There are so many things to be discovered at this tranquil green oasis!

An impressive building in the heart of town, the Mercado Municipal de Faro is a lovely place to come for a wander and to pick up fresh, local products.
Visit the bright municipal farmer’s market to see where the locals shop, to taste and try the fresh regional products from fish, seafood and meat to vegetables, honey, herbs, even flowers and plants. Stall holders might offer you some cheese, olives, and other items to taste too!

The art lovers can delight themselves with exquisite art exhibits and painting collections at the Municipal Museum of Faro. The Museu Municipal de Faro (Faro Municipal Museum), formerly known as Archaeological Museum, is installed in the Nossa Senhora da Asunção Convent, a splendid Renaissance domed building dating back to the 16th century. A collection of 17th and 19th century artwork from Portuguese, Italian and Spanish painters are on display along with sacred artifacts from churches in the region. The museum also houses significant archaeological pieces integrating prehistory, Roman and medieval periods.

You definitely have to try the Portuguese cuisine in Faro. Every region of Portugal has its own dishes and cuisine, and the Algarve is no different. A lot of that seafood, particularly oysters, actually comes from the Ria Formosa, which is just a short drive from Faro. You cannot leave without trying the local specialties!
