1. Museu Muncipal
Integrated into the ancient 16th-century convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, this exceptional and award-winning cultural spectacle is worth finding only for the gorgeous Renaissance cloister.
The permanent collection covers prehistory, the Roman, Moorish, and medieval eras, as well as the 18th and 19th centuries and it’s arranged chronologically. Roman relics discovered at nearby Milreu are prominently displayed, but while you meander through each gallery in silence, keep an eye out for the expertly made Arab oil lamps, some of which look a lot like Popeye’s pipe.
Admirers of 16th-century sculpture will be mesmerized by the exquisitely carved Manueline statues, but the most impressive display is the massive Roman floor mosaic, which dates to approximately the third century AD and depicts a fierce-looking Neptune.

2. Carmo Church
Seeing the charming cathedrals in Faro is among the most fascinating activities you can undertake here- and one of the most exquisite churches in the Algarve is Carmo Church.
Built in 1719, the twin-towered baroque church suffered significant damage from the 1755 earthquake. Only completed in 1878, the external repair was financed with riches from Brazil.
It’s delightful to see the beautiful and complex gilt carved altars with lots of cherubs within Carmo Church.
However, the remarkable Bone Chapel at Carmo Church is what draws the majority of visitors.
Every available surface in the chapel is covered in the bones and skulls of over a thousand monks, which are arranged in various geometric patterns.

3. Enjoy Algarve’s special dishes
In addition to the desire to see well-known tourist destinations and have unique experiences, there is also the curiosity to sample local cuisine.
You should definitely take advantage of the chance to sample Portuguese food when visiting the Algarve!
When visiting the Algarve, you should sample some of the following foods: Cataplana de Mariscos (seafood mixed with herbs, tomatoes, and white wine), Bacalhau à Brás (fried potatoes, codfish, and parsley mixed with eggs), Grilled sardines, enchidos (smoked sausages stuffed with various toppings) and pastéis de nata (the well-known Portuguese custard pies).

4. Tavira
Tavira’s stunning old town is the ideal day trip destination from Faro. With origins dating back to the Bronze Age, Tavira is well-known for its Roman and Moorish architectural styles.
Wander around the historic cobblestone streets, stop by the mediaeval hill castle and relax at the stunning nearby beach.
Taking a tour is the ideal way to make the most of your time in Tavira. This will free you up to unwind while your experienced tour shows you the highlights. You can select a trip that best suits your interests while riding in an electric tuk tuk- an open bike carriage vehicle.

5. Ancient ruins of Algarve
Near Faro, there are two noteworthy ancient sites to explore: Milreu and Aljezur. Whereas the latter was a Município (town), the earlier was an old Roman settlement.
You can get a decent sense of what life was like in the area during Roman times by exploring the well-preserved ruins at Milreu. An informative guided tour of the remains will help you gain a better picture of Roman life.
Visit the Faro Cliff Railway, a narrow-gauge railroad that hugs the 400-meter-tall cliffs, for an alternative kind of exploring.
Enjoy breathtaking views of the Faro cityscape and shoreline from the top of Europe’s oldest funicular!

Discover the most enchanting attractions in Faro with your family and friends, while using the best services of Faro Transfers for excellent taxi transfers and creating unforgettable memories and experiences!

1. Artistic corner
Take time to appreciate the bautiful arts! The Algarve is the perfect place to do this and it’s home to a number of art galleries and an expanding population of artists.
Situated in a beautifully renovated townhouse building in Loulé, Art Catto is an excellent gallery. Additionally, the gallery regularly hosts pop-up exhibitions at Conrad Algarve. LiR Gallery, housed within the operational Lagoa wine cooperative, offers an experience with urban art that is higher quality.
You should also visit Côrte-Real Gallery to uncover a hidden treasure trove of breathtaking artwork. This quaint gallery is off the usual path and has a really distinct atmosphere. Côrte Real is a bit of an adventure just to get to, as it is a long walk from the main path, but it’s definitely worth visiting!

2. Vila Real de Santo António
Welcome to Vila Real de Santo António, a quaint village tucked away on the Portuguese-Spanish border. Its classic 18th-century architecture, tree-lined squares and harbor full with floating boats are what give it its charming charm.
From the majestic Pombaline houses to the famous 19th-century obelisk that stands proudly in Marquês de Pombal Square, a visit here transports you back in time. At the cafes and restaurants along the shore, you may savor the regional food in addition to the rich history.
Discover the town’s many quaint shops and the lively daily market for a lovely shopping experience. Finally, enjoy views of Spain by strolling along the Guadiana River.

3. Silves Castle
Silves Castle, which dominated the landscape for kilometers around, was first constructed in the eighth century, during the Moors’ dominance over the Iberian Peninsula and then renovated in the thirteenth century.
The town was the hub of the Algarve back then, with boats transporting commodities between Portugal and North Africa, before the Arade River slowed down and cut off the town’s access to the sea.
These days, a tour of the massive castle and its lovely gardens will help you understand the prominence the town formerly held. Going with an informed guide will also reveal parts of the castle that you might not otherwise know about.
For additional information about the impact of the Romans, Visigoths and Moors, visit the adjacent archeological museum.

4. Algar Seco
Visiting the Algar Seco is yet another amazing wintertime activity in the Algarve! This network of caverns and fascinating rock formations, created over thousands of years by the unrelenting force of the Atlantic Ocean, features natural pools, sea caves and unusual photo opportunities.
The Boneca, a network of caverns and tunnels that provide breathtaking cliffside views, is not to be missed.

5. Hiking activities
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is one of the Algarve’s top winter hiking routes. Hiking along 6.8 miles of breathtaking blue water, dotted with secret caverns and quiet beaches, is an adventure of a lifetime.
The Fisherman’s Trail is another amazing route. This region spans more than 135 miles (220 kilometers) and is divided into 13 sections that can be completed on 4–14 days on the Costa Vincentina.
Try The Dunes of Almograve, a circular hike, for a shorter one-day experience. Some of the most breathtaking sections of the Fishermen’s Trail meet up with this picturesque trail, it’s truly amazing!

Enjoy the most beautiful winter adventures in Algarve with your family and friends, always counting on Algarve Transfers for high quality transfers and Algarve Car Hire for hassle free car rentals, for amazing experiences and astonishing memories!

As the most southern town in Portugal, Faro enjoys a unique role in Portugal, offering a wide variety of fascinating tourist attractions.
The history of Faro is ancient and rich, with touches of Phoenician, Roman and Moorish culture still sprinkled around the city, offering interesting unknown things to be discovered.

This is where the history of Faro begins. Faro was once known as Ossonoba, originally attracting settlers and traders since the Paleolithic era thanks to its location near the Ria Formosa lagoon.
Many people settled here and fortified a settlement long before the Romans transformed it into this town called Ossonoba. The Romans rebuilt the wall around the main city area, which now corresponds to the Old Town, where the forum, the temples and other public buildings were situated. In the Roman period, the town was basically concentrated outside the walls, where a second quarter consisted mainly in rich patrician houses. In the region of Ossonoba there were other large patrician villas, such as Milreu (9 km north of Faro). Nowadays you can still see and visit the important Roman ruins in Milreu.

Faro became a Bishop’s seat in the 4th century, even after the Visigoth occupation in the 5th century. These people of Germanic origins ruled the city until Ossonoba was taken over by the Moors in the 8th century, although the area was allowed to preserve its main port town status in the south-west of the Iberian peninsula.

The Moorish occupation lasted about 500 years and towards the end of this period, the city became the capital of an independent Moorish kingdom. It was ruled by a family called Harun, whose name gave origin to the actual name of Faro. Documents (mainly Christian sources) from the period of the Moorish occupation refer to the city sometimes as Ossonoba sometimes as Santa Maria de Hárune.

The Portuguese king Afonso III conquered Faro in 1249 and annexed it as Portuguese territory. According to the Portuguese chronicles, the city of Faro was defended by strong walls and large wooden doors. In order to conquer the city, the Portuguese soldiers collected a large amount of wood and placed it in the front of the main city dor, setting it on fire. As soon as the door collapsed, the army managed to enter and to take over the city. Under the new Christian rulership, Faro was established as the capital of the Algarve region by King Afonso III of Portugal. The city of Faro became a centre of culture and learning, some of the earliest printed books in Portugal being created in the city by a Jewish printer in the 15th century.

As in many other conquered cities, the main mosque was replaced by a Christian gothic Church, called Santa Maria church (now Cathedral). Short after the conquest, the Moorish population that lived in the town, was granted civil rights and the maintenance of their economical activities, such as farming, trade and handicrafts.

Faro became once more a Bishop’s seat in 1577, the church of Santa Maria being used as Cathedral. From the 16th century the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção (now used as the Municipal Museum) joins the Bishop’s Palace. In 1596, in a period when Spanish kings ruled Portugal, the son of Walter Devereux, first Earl of Essex became a national hero when he shared command of the expedition that captured Cadiz from the Spanish. They burned some buildings and seized the library of the Bishop of Faro. These books and other texts are currently part of the Bodleian library at the University of Oxford. One of the books included in this library was the first ever printed book in Portugal. Faro suffered another disaster in 1722 when it was ravaged by an earthquake, and again in 1755.
Unfortunately, the earthquake of 1755 destroyed many buildings in Faro. However, the destruction was less severe than in other cities in Algarve. After the earthquake, the capital of Algarve changed from Lagos to Faro. The earthquake destruction offered an opportunity for a large-scale city restoration and the building of new remarkable buildings.

Faro is an incredible vibrant city, which has wonderfully preserved its historical atmosphere, encapsulating a multidimensional spirit.
Enjoy unforgettable moments next to your dear ones, always counting on Faro Airport Transfers, which provides the best transfers at the highest standards!

You cannot miss the opportunity to visit the most beautiful places in the world, amongst which Algarve counts, very popular for its lovely beaches and mesmerizing attractions.

Algarve’s administrative center, Faro, gathers a lot of tourists from around the world every year. Faro is more than an administrative center of the Algarve. It is a place with an antique, relevant Roman legacy, a realm where the entwining between the Western and Moorish cultures in the Middle Ages is still tangible and a busy port, with a colorful and happy look and welcoming people to help you feel like home.

Faro can be described as a city with numerous attractions which vary from the wonderful places to visit, lovely spots where you can relax or spend a peaceful afternoon to locations where you can discover the spirit of Faro by trying its exquisite cuisine, flavors and scents.

If you want to explore the surroundings, you can have an adventure to Ria Formosa Natural Park, an impressive natural escape, formed of salt pans, lagoons and barrier islands. These islands protect the region from the powerful seas, while also providing some of the quietest and most scenic beaches of the Algarve. A boat tour is a great way to discover the region, with its thriving marine ecosystem, unspoilt beaches, and rich fishing heritage.

Have a wonderful time while strolling in Jardim da Alameda, the largest and probably the oldest park in Faro. It was founded in the late 19th Century and the nearby school enlivens it. There are plenty of old trees, a little water cascade, and a couple of classic buildings, including the Municipal Library.
Walk around the paths crossing the bridges over the stream and take your time to admire the ornamental waterfalls and fountains. There are so many things to be discovered at this tranquil green oasis!

An impressive building in the heart of town, the Mercado Municipal de Faro is a lovely place to come for a wander and to pick up fresh, local products.
Visit the bright municipal farmer’s market to see where the locals shop, to taste and try the fresh regional products from fish, seafood and meat to vegetables, honey, herbs, even flowers and plants. Stall holders might offer you some cheese, olives, and other items to taste too!

The art lovers can delight themselves with exquisite art exhibits and painting collections at the Municipal Museum of Faro. The Museu Municipal de Faro (Faro Municipal Museum), formerly known as Archaeological Museum, is installed in the Nossa Senhora da Asunção Convent, a splendid Renaissance domed building dating back to the 16th century. A collection of 17th and 19th century artwork from Portuguese, Italian and Spanish painters are on display along with sacred artifacts from churches in the region. The museum also houses significant archaeological pieces integrating prehistory, Roman and medieval periods.

You definitely have to try the Portuguese cuisine in Faro. Every region of Portugal has its own dishes and cuisine, and the Algarve is no different. A lot of that seafood, particularly oysters, actually comes from the Ria Formosa, which is just a short drive from Faro. You cannot leave without trying the local specialties!

Come and discover the marvels of Faro, always counting on Faro Airport Transfers!

Those of you who will be landing in Faro Airport have a great treat in store for your holiday, not that Faro Airport is anything extraordinarily special but more along the lines of where Faro airport is located and what the region means for your holiday.

The city of Faro is the major city of the Algarve region of southern Portugal, a region world-renown for its incredible year-round weather, great coastline, food and welcoming people.

Despite its location, Faro is still pretty much a working-city and most travelers to the region will only be passing through, because they’ll be landing here and then heading to the resort of their choice. Thankfully being such a well-known area and tourism being such a major part of the economy, you can find a plethora of Faro transfers services ready and willing to take you to your Algarve destination.

The great thing about these Faro transfers is that they will not only take you to where you’re going but they’ll also bring you back to the airport when you schedule it. More-so than this, you can actually employ the same Faro transfer services to take you for day trips around the various other resorts in the region in case you want to visit a particular one, sunbathe on a particular beach or just see another piece of this sunny and welcoming place.

For those who choose to stay in Algarve, at least for a day or two, they’ll find a clearly more Portuguese feel than most of the resort towns which, truth be told, cater to a very international audience, and they are themselves very similar in that regard. Faro on the other hand features an attractive marina, very well-maintained parks and plazas and of course an Old Town.

The Old Town is by far the most touristy part of the city with its outdoor cafes, pedestrian lanes and historic buildings, all of which set along winding cobbled streets. Also the city has nearby beaches as well, one of the main ones being actually very close to the airport.
