1. Museu Muncipal
Integrated into the ancient 16th-century convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, this exceptional and award-winning cultural spectacle is worth finding only for the gorgeous Renaissance cloister.
The permanent collection covers prehistory, the Roman, Moorish, and medieval eras, as well as the 18th and 19th centuries and it’s arranged chronologically. Roman relics discovered at nearby Milreu are prominently displayed, but while you meander through each gallery in silence, keep an eye out for the expertly made Arab oil lamps, some of which look a lot like Popeye’s pipe.
Admirers of 16th-century sculpture will be mesmerized by the exquisitely carved Manueline statues, but the most impressive display is the massive Roman floor mosaic, which dates to approximately the third century AD and depicts a fierce-looking Neptune.

2. Carmo Church
Seeing the charming cathedrals in Faro is among the most fascinating activities you can undertake here- and one of the most exquisite churches in the Algarve is Carmo Church.
Built in 1719, the twin-towered baroque church suffered significant damage from the 1755 earthquake. Only completed in 1878, the external repair was financed with riches from Brazil.
It’s delightful to see the beautiful and complex gilt carved altars with lots of cherubs within Carmo Church.
However, the remarkable Bone Chapel at Carmo Church is what draws the majority of visitors.
Every available surface in the chapel is covered in the bones and skulls of over a thousand monks, which are arranged in various geometric patterns.

3. Enjoy Algarve’s special dishes
In addition to the desire to see well-known tourist destinations and have unique experiences, there is also the curiosity to sample local cuisine.
You should definitely take advantage of the chance to sample Portuguese food when visiting the Algarve!
When visiting the Algarve, you should sample some of the following foods: Cataplana de Mariscos (seafood mixed with herbs, tomatoes, and white wine), Bacalhau à Brás (fried potatoes, codfish, and parsley mixed with eggs), Grilled sardines, enchidos (smoked sausages stuffed with various toppings) and pastéis de nata (the well-known Portuguese custard pies).

4. Tavira
Tavira’s stunning old town is the ideal day trip destination from Faro. With origins dating back to the Bronze Age, Tavira is well-known for its Roman and Moorish architectural styles.
Wander around the historic cobblestone streets, stop by the mediaeval hill castle and relax at the stunning nearby beach.
Taking a tour is the ideal way to make the most of your time in Tavira. This will free you up to unwind while your experienced tour shows you the highlights. You can select a trip that best suits your interests while riding in an electric tuk tuk- an open bike carriage vehicle.

5. Ancient ruins of Algarve
Near Faro, there are two noteworthy ancient sites to explore: Milreu and Aljezur. Whereas the latter was a Município (town), the earlier was an old Roman settlement.
You can get a decent sense of what life was like in the area during Roman times by exploring the well-preserved ruins at Milreu. An informative guided tour of the remains will help you gain a better picture of Roman life.
Visit the Faro Cliff Railway, a narrow-gauge railroad that hugs the 400-meter-tall cliffs, for an alternative kind of exploring.
Enjoy breathtaking views of the Faro cityscape and shoreline from the top of Europe’s oldest funicular!

Discover the most enchanting attractions in Faro with your family and friends, while using the best services of Faro Transfers for excellent taxi transfers and creating unforgettable memories and experiences!

Faro, the capital of Algarve, is simply an effervescent city which attracts thousands of people every year. Even if you’re frequently visiting it, you’re still going to be surprised every single time!
Faro is surrounded by must-see places to visit and numerous things to do. No matter how long your stay is, it’s easy to find places of interest in Faro to enjoy your experience and to live to the fullest every single moment!
Faro has a much more Portuguese character than most tourist cities on the coast. Everyone who visits this place will be completely mesmerized by its charm and beauty!

The picturesque Old Town (Cidade Velha) with its medieval walls, the white washed narrow streets, the attractive squares, its museums and churches are good reasons to visit Faro, to discover this enchanting city and to fall in love with its uniqueness!
A trip to Faro cannot be completed without visiting its Old Town!
Featuring lovely cobblestone streets, important landmark buildings, museums, Roman passages, captivating churches, distinguished tiled houses, lively squares and cozy cafes, Faro’s Old Town is a “city” within the city.

While in the Old Town, you cannot miss the Sé Catedral de Faro, also known as Igreja da Sé, located in Largo da Sé, a picturesque orange tree-lined square that is home to the 19th-century Town Hall, the 18th-century Bishop’s Palace, and the ancient cathedral.
Built on the site of an Arab mosque, Faro Cathedral was consecrated in the late 13th century, but successive facelifts have added Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque features that lend the building’s exterior a rather haphazard look.
The interior consists of three naves divided by columns of the Tuscan order and chapels in Gothic, Baroque, and Mannerism styles, sumptuously decorated with elaborate gilded wood altars and gazed azulejos (Portuguese tiles). The cathedral was reconstructed after the devastating 1755 earthquake.

Those fascinated by history, away from the Old Town, Faro’s city center is landmarked by the 18th-century Carmo Church. The striking twin-towered façade of this Baroque beauty dominates the neighborhood, and, apart from being an outstanding attraction for tourists, it also represents a site of devotion for locals.
A wander inside reveals an impressive altarpiece, glistening with gold leaf from Brazil, and an ornamented sacristy. But there’s a more ghoulish attraction behind the church, which brings thounsands of visitors, and that is the extraordinary Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones).
Built in the 19th century, the chapel’s interior is decorated with bones and skulls of over 1200 monks, which fill every single available surface of the chapel, and there are displayed in different geometric patterns.

Another not to be missed location is The Infante Dom Henrique Archaeological Museum, housed in the former convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção in Faro just behind Faro Cathedral, also known as the Municipal Museum of Faro.
The Museu Municipal de Faro’s permanent exhibits include a range of artifacts from prehistoric Portugal to neoclassical times including pottery, paintings and a large 3rd century Roman mosaic showing Oceanus, the god of the sea, which was discovered near Faro Railway Station.
The collection is closely linked to Faro’s history, since the time the city as called Ossonoba. It has artifacts from the pre-historic, Roman, Moorish and medieval periods, including a gallery of religious artworks and paintings from the 20th century.

If you’re looking for relaxing things to do in Faro, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is the ideal destination, which was selected as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal.
Classified as a Natural Park in 1987, Ria Formosa encompasses an area of about 18 000 hectares, and is protected from the sea by 5 barrier-islands and 2 peninsulas: the Peninsula of Ancão that the locals call Ilha de Faro, the Barreta Island also known as Ilha Deserta, the Culatra Island, the Island of Armona, the Island of Tavira, Cabanas Island and, finally, the Peninsula of Cacela. You cannot leave these places without rejoicing their natural beauty and charm!

Have your dream holiday and adventurous fairy tale on these golden lands, always counting on Faro Airport Transfers, which provides infinite tips and trips for the most beautiful moments!

While visiting and admiring the Faro wonders, you can also enjoy the trips and sight-seeings tours to the lovely cities of Lisbon and Porto, simply and quickly relying on Lisbon Low Cost Transfers and Porto Low Cost Transfers for unforgettable and amazing moments with your family and friends!
