Faro or Albufeira? That is the question!

No visit to Portugal could ever be complete without a stop by the warm, sunlit shore of the Algarve, by the Atlantic Ocean. More than a seaside destination, the region is a vivid depository of a rich culture, as well as an important economic center. The only decision that really remains to be made is: Faro or Albufeira? That is the question!

Choosing between two of the most prominent spots in the Algarve can be hard. But here are a few points of attraction in both cities we were thinking we’d present before leaving the decision up to you.

Faro, the capital city of the Algarve region, is a booming economic and cultural center, as well as an important tourist destination. Among the most important attractions here, count the Archeology Museum. The permanent collection represents the Portuguese history from prehistoric and Roman times, through the Moorish rule and the Reconquista, until the 18th and 19th centuries. Housed in a stunning 16th century convent, this museum is a must see in town.

Albufeira is one of the most popular seaside destination not only in Portugal, but all throughout Europe.

Albufeira retains the traditional air of the long-lost times when it was a mere fishing village by the ocean. Beaches are some of the most popular spots in the city. Praia da Oura and Praia dos Pescadores are unspoiled beauties that attract hundreds of tourists with their fine golden sands and their accessibility features.

In the Old Town Center of Faro, you can visit the Largos da Se, the Paco Episcopal – a wonderful palace of the bishop – and the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

In Albufeira, the Largo Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco is a colorful maze of narrow winding streets lined up with shops, boutiques, art galleries and more. It is the favorite promenade in town. Albufeira transfers can take you there in no time.

As for a trip to the airport, Faro transfers can take you back there when your amazing trip is over.
